Teaching procedures

Step 1: Warming-up

1. Greet as usual.

2. Let students enjoy a song named The Rainbow and ask them what the name of this song is. The song goes like this:

Look at the rainbow,

The rainbow,

The rainbow.

Look at the rainbow

In the sky.

Red, orange, yellow,

Green and blue,

Purple and violet too.

Invite students to answer the question. Then tell them that the name is The Rainbow and show a picture of the rainbow when the rain stopped and the sun came out. Finally, lead into the topic-Look at the rainbow.

Step 2: Pre-listening

Show some fruits to students with the help of objects and ask students “What is this in English?” Guide students to answer “It’s an apple and it is red.” After that, show a banana and ask students “What color is this banana?” In the end, students can learn these new words and sentences.

Step 3: While-listening

1. Extensive listening

Read the passage for students and ask them to answer what the speakers are talking about by giving them a tip: catch the keywords.

Then invite one student to show the right answer: rainbow.

2. Intensive listening

Play the tape for students and ask students to answer two questions:

Q1: How many colors are there in that rainbow?

Q2: What are these colors?

Then lead students to fill in the chart on the blackboard. Meanwhile, emphasize the target language: what color is this? And the response: it is...

3. Ask students to read after the tape for the last time and tell them to imitate the intonation and pronunciation.

Step 4: Post-listening

Divide students into groups of three and ask students to act out this conversation. 5 minutes are given to prepare. Then invite some groups to share their performances.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: invite one student to be a little teacher and summarize today’s lesson. Ask students to enjoy beautiful things and colorful life.

To make the students learn these color words better, I used real objects as my teaching aid. First, I showed them apples, bananas and grapes. These fruits are familiar to the students and they can recognize them quickly in English. Secondly, I asked them to describe the fruits and then guided them to express the color of the fruits. Finally, I ask students to tell the colors of other fruits with the target sentence pattern, so that students can learn the color words while describing fruits.

我虽然没有相应的在学校工作的教学经历,但是我很喜欢英语。在校期间,我参加了学校组织的英语演讲比赛,我通过前期一个多月的准备和不断的刻意练习,最终代表了我学院去参加校级比赛,获得了二等奖的成绩。此外,在学校与加拿大院校的一次对外交流活动中,我很幸运作为一名交换生在加拿大学习了两个月,在这期间我的英语有了很大的进步。

Please don't let us wait for you.

Ask students to answer the question. Then tell them that we can wear beautiful wearings on a sunny day and lead into the topic.

Step 2: Presentation

1. Show some stick figures for clothes on the blackboard, ask them what they are, and describe some information related to clothes. Then introduce the new words to the students.

2. Guide students to read all the new words one more time.

3. Ask students “Do you know how to use the new words in our daily life?” and teach them the new sentence patterns such as “what do you wear on sunny days?” “I wear my T-shirt, shorts, cap and sunglasses.”

4. Encourage students to find out that they can change the clothes and weather in the sentence patterns to make more asks and answers.

Step 3: Practice

Play 2 games with students.

1. High and low voice.

Tell students to Play a game called high and low voice to practice the words. The rule is: when the teacher reads words in a high voice, students read the words in a low voice. When the teacher reads the words in a low voice, students should use a high voice to read them.

2. Describe the picture

Show students a picture of people’s wearing in different weather. Divided students into groups of 4, and ask students to describe the person’s wearing by using the sentence patterns they have learned. Then invite some of them to share their works and give them positive feedback.

Tell them to imagine that the school newspaper is doing a survey about what they wear in different weather and ask them to have a role play about it. Then ask them whether they want to learn more and lead them into today’s topic.

Step 2: Presentation

1. Read a new tongue twister called Billy Boggs and Roy. Ask them what the tongue twister is talking about.

2. Draw stick figures and ask students to guess what they are. Then explain and write down the words “boy”, “toy”, “noise” and “voice” on the blackboard. Then ask students to read after the recordings. Next, read the 4words and remind them to pay attention to the shape of the teacher’s mouth carefully in order to learn the correct pronunciation. 3. Then make a conclusion about the pronunciation rule of the letter groups “oy” and “oi”. The letter groups “oy” and “oi” are both pronounced as /ϽІ/.

Step 3: Practice

Activity 1: Magic box

Ask students to read the words with letter groups with “oy” and “oi” that are shown on the screen and then put the words into the right box. 5 minutes will be given. Then invite some students to write the words on the blackboard and check by reading together.

Activity 2: Word family

Divided students into 6 groups and help “oy” family and “oi” family find more words with these two-letter groups. 8 minutes will be given. Finally, the group which has more words will be the winner and the losing groups should sing a song in front of the class.

Step 4: Production

Dubbing game

Play a short video clip about a movie called Zootopia. Then work in pairs. One is Judy, the other one is Nick. 10 minutes are given to them to make a dubbing. Remind them to focus on the words with target spelling rules and then invite some groups to share their performance.

Step 5: Summary and Homework

Summary: invite a student to be a little teacher and summarize today’s lesson together.
