A Sad Love Story
Teaching aims

Step 1: Warming-up
1. Greet students and say “What a nice day!”.
2. Let students enjoy a poem “Eternal love between us two, Shall with stand the time apart.” Ask students to think about the topic of this poem and share what they see: love.
Later, introduce Valentine’s Day at home and abroad. The western Valentine’s Day is on February 14th, on which people send roses and chocolates to the people they love. The Chinese Valentine’s Day or the Double Seventh Day is on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Upon the introduction and interaction, lead into the topic.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Catch the paragrapph
Read the paragraph for students to enable students to catch why Li Fang is heart-broken. Meantime, try to guess the meaning of the underlined words and phrases according to the context. Later, check their answers: it is because Hu Jin, the girl Li Fang loves, didn’t turn up on Valentine’s Day.
2. Learn the words and phrases
Upon students’ rough understanding of underlined words and phrases, the teacher will give some hints and make a supplement as follows:
(1) Turn up: it means to start to be seen, whose meaning is similar to “appear” in the paragraph. It also means to increase, for example, turn up the volume means to increase the volume. The related phrase is “turn down”, which refers to refuse or decrease.
(2) Keep one’s word: it means “keep a promise”, and the antonym is “break one’s word”. Emphasize the singular form of “word” in this expression.
(3) Apologize: it is similar to “say sorry to sb”. It is an intransitive verb, and the fixed expression is “apologize to sb for sth”. The noun from is “apology” and the corresponding phrase is “make an apology for sth”.

Summary: invite a student to recall what they’ve learned today. Tell students they can collect and memorize words with word chunks.

Therefore, English vocabulary teaching is the focus of high school English teachers, meanwhile, it is a challenge as well. In order to improve the teaching effect, I mainly pay attention to the following tricks:
First, to generate students’ learning interest. From the psychology, only when students’ interests are actively created can they open their brain to think seriously and effectively to obtain the necessary knowledge.
Second, to teach students memorization strategies to improve their vocabulary learning efficiency. Word formation is an effective way to remember words. If the teacher imparts its rules to students, their interest and ability of memorizing words can be greatly improved. Besides, guessing words according to context is also an important way to learn English vocabulary.
Educators should adopt different vocabulary teaching methods according to students’ characteristics. Only in this way can we improve students’ interest in learning English, improve the quality and efficiency of vocabulary teaching, and eventually improve their comprehensive language ability.
